Day Therapy Unit
The Day Therapy Unit is an active, therapeutic environment where staff aim to meet your physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs.
Aims of the Service
At Day Therapy we use activity as a treatment medium. Activity is very important to
- improve self-esteem and self-confidence
- provide a distraction from symptoms
- encourage socialisation and communication
- maintain and improve mobility and co-ordination
This approach is to assist our patients with independence, empowerment and the ability to make their own choices. Our aim is to maximise an individual’s potential, whatever that potential may be.
What You Can Expect
You will be helped to develop and agree a programme and plan of care which will enable you to control your symptoms rather than the symptoms controlling you. Your condition will be assessed regularly and realistic goals will be agreed and reviewed with the team.
Living With Cancer – Kathleen’s Story
For the last nine weeks Emma, an Occupational Therapy Student on placement at ACCORD has been working with Kathleen, one of our service users in Day Therapy Unit. Kathleen and Emma have been working together to produce a pamphlet which chronicles Kathleen’s journey living with Cancer.
Last Friday saw the launch of this heartfelt and inspirational account of one ladies life ‘living with (not dying of) cancer.’ Fellow service users, family, friends and staff came together in Day Therapy to celebrate and congratulate Kathleen (and Emma!) for all of their hard work.
Kathleen’s pamphlet is an honest and practical account of being diagnosed with a life limiting illness and how she chooses to cope with this every day. It even contains advice and tips for people who may be in the same situation and it is hoped that it can be as much help to others as it was to Kathleen.
You can view and download Kathleen’s pamphlet here.
