As I reflect on the opportunities and challenges of the past 2 years since we implemented our updated strategy, I am struck by two things: how the hospice’s heart has always been in the right place and how collaborative you all have been in moving ACCORD forward.
This has been evident in the response made by the Income Generation team to the fact that we set out this year with our largest ever projected deficit of nearly £500,000. Back in 2017-18, we said we would restructure our approach to, and staffing for, our three main income streams – our shops, fundraising activities and lottery. We did rationalise our retail units from nine to six and relocate our store. This has seen shop income increase by 19% on last year’s comparative total. Developments within fundraising have led to a 22% increase over the same period. Changes to our lottery have been rewarded with its highest ever number of players (just over 6,000). In financial terms this has meant an additional £119,000 of income so far this year. This increase, combined with income from legacies (always unpredictable) will help towards bridging our deficit gap.
I have also seen the same kind of thoughtful and collaborative work in the ongoing review of our community orientated services. Such drive and commitment by all has ensured our service provision meets the needs and expectations of our patients and families as well as complementing the community services delivered by the Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership.
During this time we have witnessed the refurbishment of our Inpatient Unit and feedback confirms that this facility is modern, fresh and meets the needs and expectations of patients, families and staff.
From the outside the Hospice seems to glide effortlessly, but I know the reality can be quite different. My deep thanks go to all of you for your commitment to the hard work that is involved in continually evolving and sustaining the services of ACCORD Hospice.
Your dedication and hard work is greatly appreciated. There is no time more appropriate as we head into the festive period to thank all of you and wish you a peaceful festive period and good wishes for the new year of 2020.
